Custom Cartoon Bicycle...San Francisco.
J.D.This guy is one of the coolest guys around S.F. He has style in everything he does. His hair, his clothes, his accessories and now his bike.
J.D. works at a high end retail store near my salon and I have wanted to take his picture for awhile. He walked by today with his bike and even though he was wearing a hat I had to get a shot of him!
I'm sure you will be seeing more of this guy on The HotHead with his hat off!

High Fasion Sleek Bob...Maiden Lane, San Francisco

WandaShe is wearing a sleek bob that is an ideal match with her beautiful yellow dress.
Notice the difference between the first photograph and the second. In the first photo her hair was blown by a little breeze and because hair is a wonderful fiber and not a static material it does move. So no matter how perfectly you style your hair or how much hair product you use it will not stay the same throughout the day! You can however take some steps to keep this hairstyle looking fantastic all day long!
Step one: Towel dry your hair to remove most of the moisture from your hair if your styling after a wash.
Step two: Work a small amount of smoothing creme or conditioning oil from the middle of the hair strands through to the ends.
Step three: Blow dry your hair. Depending on the amount of curl your hair has you may get away with just your fingers but if you have a lot of curls use a medium to large round brush in combination with you blowdryer to pull the curls out as best you can.
Step four: Use a flat iron. Take small sections of hair to flat iron carefully working from the back and bottom of your head up to the top.
You may want to add a little more smoothing creme, conditioning oil or hairspray for a sleeker look or just to control fly away strands.
Did you Know?
Hair straighteners work by breaking down the hair's hydrogen bonds found in the hair's cortex, which cause hair to bend and become curly. Once the bonds are broken, hair is prevented from holding its original, natural form, though the hydrogen bonds can re-form if exposed to moisture. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia © 2001-2006

Wrapped Dreadlocks...San Francisco.

BrianA real Rastafarian. Brian wraps his dreadlocks in observance of a Rastafarian custom.
Did you know?
Rastafari associate dreadlocks with a spiritual journey that one takes in the process of locking their hair (growing dreadlocks). It is taught that patience is the key to growing dreadlocks, a journey of the mind, soul and spirituality. Its spiritual pattern is aligned with the Rastafari movement. The way to form natural dreadlocks is to allow hair to grow in its natural pattern, without cutting, combing or brushing, but simply to wash it with pure water. Old Hollywood Hair
I wish all the videos on YouTube were this professional.
I have decided to add videos that I come across that will help you with styling Ideas or interesting products for your hair.
This is basic overview of the way a hair set should be done. What the stylist does not tell you is what products to use or how long the model sat under the dryer. Which by the way could take up an hour with wet hair and a heavy Hair Gel!
For those of you who don't have an extra hour to spend on your hair might find this a little more useful.
Here is a basic how to use Hair Rollers from wikiHow.

Girl w/ The Blue Green Hair....San Francisco.
Love Fest.Sometimes there is no definition for a hairstyle, but I always admire people that can do whatever they want with their hair and walk right out onto the street with total confidence.
This defines the girl with the blue green hair.
You might say to yourself what does this girls style have to do with me? I would never wear that on my head! Most of the great stylists and artists from every discipline find their inspiration from the street. Take what you like and leave what you don't.
Well ok. she is a little bit Emo.
Did you know?
Today Emo is commonly tied to both music and fashion as well as an inspiration toward the emo subculture, and the term "emo" is sometimes stereotyped with tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) brushed to one side of the face or over one or both eyes, dyed black, straight hair, tight t-shirts (sometimes short sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands (or other designer shirts), studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes and thick, black horn-rimmed glasses. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia © 2001-2006

The Pompadour...San Francisco.

Johnny
I have not posted for a while and I'm ready to start the new year off right!
This is a picture I took last year for my friend Johnny Boyd a world renowned singer songwriter and his wife Angela.
He is wearing a contemporary version of the classic Pompadour. The main difference between Johnny's style and the classic Pompadour is the length on top. The classic style would have had a lot more length with the front pushed forward at the hairline and then combed back tapering lower towards the crown forming a wave shape when viewed in profile.
I would use a pomade or paste to achieve this look after the haircut.
Did you know?
The Pompadour was a fashion trend in the 1950s among male rockabilly artists and actors like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Little Richard, Marlon Brando (The Wild One) and James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause). In the late twentieth century, rockabilly revival musicians such as The Stray Cats with Brian Setzer, The Pole Cats, The Rockats and other musicians in the punk scene such as Pretenders bassist Pete Farndon, members of the band The Clash, Social Distortion and the Disgusteens were known for wearing this style at times. Morrissey, formerly of the band The Smiths, has also worn a pompadour hair style throughout his career. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia © 2001-2006

Chopsticks...New Montgomery St., San Francisco.

BenThis guy is amazing! Both in the way he styles his hair and how confidently he wears it. Living in San Francisco, men with long hair are familiar but how many of them wear chopsticks in their hair and with honor! Actually the correct name for these ornaments oddly enough are hair sticks even though I'm pretty sure what Ben has in his hair are common chopsticks you would find in many local Asian restaurants.
Ben says he has been growing his hair out for a long time and the length almost reaches his waist. He only washes his hair a few times a week to keep it from getting to dry and uses a conditioner to add moisture to both the hair and scalp.
Did you know?
A hair stick (also hairstick) is a straight, pointed device, usually between five and nine inches in length, used to hold a person's hair in place in a hair bun or similar hairstyle.Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia © 2001-2006

Group of great hairstyles....Union Square, San Francisco.
HairstylistsYou would think it would be easy to find people with really great hairstyles in a cool city like San Francisco but it's not!
So when I saw a whole group of people that looked like they spent a lot more time than thirty seconds to fix their hair I got excited! In my excitement I neglected to use my observation skills to notice that what I had found was a whole pod of hairstylists! I was in a hurry and did not have time to interview them as to what services each of them specialized in but if their work is as cool as they are I would not hesitate to have any of them do my hair. You can find them at Metamorphosis Salon.

Custom Creation...Muni L Train, San Francisco.
RobI was on the Muni train not necessarily minding my own business when I saw the next HotHead. I almost let this guy get away without taking a picture of his awesome hairstyle! You have to have a great personality to pull this one off and Rob definitely does! I'm at a loss for what you call this style he said this is what his hair morphed into while growing out his Mohawk. The closest style is called a Quiff?
Did you know?
The Quiff is a hairstyle that combines the 1950s pompadour hairstyle, the 50s flattop, and sometimes a mohawk . The etymology of the word is uncertain but may derive from the French word "coiffe" which can mean either a hairstyle or, going further back, the mail knights wore over their heads and under their helmets. Long Hair...United Nations Plaza, San Francisco.
Skater BoyI think Skater Boy's hair is great! His hair looks cool because he is cool, just being himself. Most of the great modern hair fashions come from the street before they make it to the runway and on to your head.
Did you know?
Exactly what "long hair" is can change from culture to culture, or even within cultures. For example, a woman with chin-length hair may be said to have short hair, while a man with the same length of hair could be said to have long hair. The traditional definition of "long hair" in English meant, roughly, someone artistically knowledgeable or wise, an aesthete. As a descriptive term, it has been applied to Merovingians and classical music enthusiasts, as well as hippies and aesthetes. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia © 2001-2006

The Classic Bob w/ Bangs.....History Park, San Jose.
Getting ready with Olivia in the hotel room.
Old fashioned car.
In the schoolhouse.
With Mikey.Dolin
This is a series I shot from my friends Dolin & Mathew's wedding. Definitely one of the best experience's of my photographic career! Dolin is also one of my long time friends and a long time Hair Client.
She has a classic Bob Cut w/ Bangs.
Did you know?
A "bob cut" is a short haircut in which a weighted area is left to fall between the ears and chin. It became modern for women in the early 1920s, and in the 1970s it became popular as a men's style. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia © 2001-2006
The Fauxhawk...The Crocker Galleria, San Francisco.
ZackThis good looking guy is not only a great client and aspiring model but also a very patient friend. I kept telling him not to smile for the picture which goes against his very nature! He could not stop laughing!!!
A little styling tip: He uses a paste instead of a gel. A little blow-drying in an upward direction along the sides of his head just enough to get most of the moisture out before he puts the paste in.
Did you know?
The fauxhawk (or faux-hawk) hairstyle is an approximation of a mohawk , made without shaving or buzzing the hair on the sides of the head, allowing an imitation of the look of a true mohawk without having to commit to removing most of one's hair. In many cases, the look can be temporarily set aside by simply combing or restyling the hair. The name is a portmanteau of faux (the French word for false) and mohawk.
